Research Notes

1. Overview

The Sanwa Denshi OBSF-30-MG is, according to its catalog product name ("OBSF-30 Metallic Gold 30mm Snap-in"), the Metallic Gold color variant of Sanwa's OBSF-30 snap-in pushbutton family — the industry-standard 30mm button used in Vewlix, Blast City, and Versus City arcade cabinets worldwide. The "OBSF" designation denotes snap-in mounting (vs. OBSN = screw-in), and "MG" is Sanwa's two-letter code for Metallic Gold. The OBSF-30 uses Sanwa's proprietary SW-68 non-clicking microswitch and is OEM-installed in flagship fightsticks from Qanba (Obsidian), Hori, and MadCatz. The MG (Metallic Gold) finish, like the MS (Metallic Silver) sibling, is a specialty color variant outside Sanwa's core solid-color lineup. DATA-QUALITY FLAG: The OBSF-30-MG part number does not appear on Sanwa's official product page (sanwa-d.co.jp), nor at major US retailers (Focus Attack, Arcade Shock, Paradise Arcade Shop), EU retailers (SmallCab, Pincab, Arcade Expert NL, JDF Arcade), or Japanese retailers (Marutsu, Attasa, Yahoo Shopping). It is confirmed only from the catalog product name. Sanwa does offer metallic-finish buttons under the separate OBSJ series (which uses evaporative paint), suggesting "MG" may be a limited, regional, or discontinued code — or potentially a catalog-assigned code for a cross-compatible OBSJ-style plunger/cap on OBSF-30 hardware.

2. User Sentiment

The OBSF-30 family is near-universally praised in the fighting game community for its feather-light actuation (~50–60 gram-force), fast reactive time, and smooth, quiet feel — consistently described as the gold standard for competitive arcade play (r/fightsticks, r/StreetFighter, Shoryuken/Supercombo archive). Users frequently compare it favorably against Hori Hayabusa and Crown/Samducksa buttons, praising elimination of wobble and mushiness. A minority seek clicky alternatives (Seimitsu PS-14-G, Crown 202) for tactile feedback. Minor QC complaints are documented: occasional squeaking from plastic offcuts on the plunger, upstroke microswitch irregularities, and batch-to-batch tightness inconsistency. These are not widespread but are recurring themes across multiple Reddit threads and European forums. No user reviews or community discussion specific to the MG color/finish were found during research.

3. Real-World Applications

The OBSF-30 is the default button in the most significant Japanese arcade cabinets (Vewlix, Blast City, Versus City, Astro City) and is OEM-installed in flagship fightsticks including Qanba Obsidian, Hori RAP4, MadCatz TE/TE2, and Mayflash F500/F700 Elite. It is a primary component in leverless all-button controllers (e.g., FightBox F1-PC-W, RAC-J800B) and custom arcade MAME cabinet builds. DIY arcade community projects include LED PCB mods (WS2812B), autofire PCBs soldered to brass terminals, and silent-ring dampener modifications. The MG (Metallic Gold) variant would serve the same functional role as any OBSF-30 in these applications, with the distinction being purely cosmetic.

4. Technical Specifications

  • Mounting hole diameter: 30mm
  • Outer diameter: ~33mm (phi25 cap face)
  • Panel thickness: 2–4mm (snap-in clips designed for this range)

  • Terminal: 2.8mm quick-disconnect tabs (.110 standard)
  • Plunger shape: Convex (slightly raised face)

5. Ordering & Compatibility

Standard OBSF-30 solid-color variants are priced at approximately $3.25 USD (Paradise Arcade Shop, Focus Attack) and ~274 JPY (Marutsu.co.jp Japan). The MG (Metallic Gold) variant is not consistently stocked at any confirmed retailer — it does not appear in US, EU, or Japanese retailer catalogs reviewed during research. Sanwa does manufacture a separate OBSJ-30 series (Jewel/evaporative-paint metallic finish) that may be the actual product behind the MG designation, though this is unconfirmed. The OBSF-30-MG is interchangeable with all standard OBSF-30 variants (same snap-in mounting) and compatible with Qanba, Hori, MadCatz TE/TE2, Mayflash F500, and all Japanese-standard 30mm button holes. Plungers and rims are field-swappable across OBSF-30 units.

6. Known Issues

OBSF-30 family QC issues are documented across Reddit and European forums: some units squeak due to plastic offcuts on the plunger; some develop upstroke microswitch irregularities; batch-to-batch tightness variance exists. These are considered minor anomalies rather than systematic defects — the community broadly recommends the OBSF-30 without reservation. The primary data-quality concern for the MG variant specifically: FLAG — OBSF-30-MG is not found on sanwa-d.co.jp, at Focus Attack, Arcade Shock, Paradise Arcade Shop, SmallCab, Pincab, Arcade Expert NL, Marutsu, or Yahoo Shopping Japan. The "Metallic Gold" color and "-MG" code are derived solely from the catalog product name. This variant may be limited-edition, discontinued, regionally exclusive, or a catalog-assigned code. The same FLAG applies to the OBSF-30-MS (Metallic Silver) sibling, which was similarly unverifiable.
