Research Notes

1. Overview

The Ink V2 Yellow is the "quick" member of Gateron's flagship Ink V2 family — same translucent smokey-blend polycarbonate housing and POM stem as Ink Black/Red, tuned with a shorter, faster stroke rather than a lighter spring. Gateron's own datasheet rates it at 60±15gf actuation (not 50g), with a short 1.2mm pre-travel / 3.4mm total travel vs. Black/Red's standard 2.0mm/4.0mm. Several blogs citing "50g" appear to confuse it with Gateron's unrelated standard (non-Ink) Yellow switch.

2. User Sentiment

Called "one of the smoothest linears" in Gateron's premium tier, with a brighter/cleaner sound than Ink Black's deeper "muted thock." RGBKeys frames Yellow vs Black as a speed/gaming pick vs a controlled/heavy typing pick. Compared mainly to Ink Black (heavier, more controlled) and Gateron Oil King (smoother, buttery, deeper thock at ~55g; Ink housing is clackier/"chirpier"). Mild factory scratchiness/stem wobble is common line-wide — improved over V1's fall-out-prone leaves but not eliminated.

3. Real-World Applications

Built for fast typing and gaming where quick actuation beats a heavy, deliberate bottom-out. Popular in hot-swap gaming and speed-oriented customs; less favored by typists wanting Black's heavier feel. Bright, clacky tone suits builders chasing "poppy" sound over thockier switches like Oil King.

4. Technical Specs

  • Type: Linear
  • Actuation: 60±15gf (official Gateron spec; some blogs cite 50g — likely conflated with standard non-Ink Yellow)
  • Bottom-out: ~67gf
  • Travel: 1.2±0.3mm pre-travel / 3.4mm max total (shorter than Black/Red's 2.0/4.0mm)
  • Stem: POM; Housing: proprietary translucent smokey-yellow "Ink" blend, top+bottom
  • Spring steel, lightly factory lubed
  • Mount: 5-pin PCB, hot-swap compatible
  • Cycle life: 50,000,000 (50M) — not 80M

5. Ordering & Compatibility

Sold in 10/30/35-pc packs by Divinikey, KBDfans, MechanicalKeyboards.com, 1upkeyboards, RGBKeys, Dangkeebs, KPrepublic. Street price ~$0.60–$1.20/switch. Standard 5-pin MX footprint, hot-swap/solderable; SMD LED support unraised-only.

6. Known Issues

Mild factory scratchiness and slight stem wobble out of the box, generally fixed with films/lube. Contact leaves more secure than V1 but can still be pushed out with thumb pressure. No major failure-mode complaints beyond typical premium-linear break-in variance.

Panel cutout: 22mm. Insert from the front of the panel, secure with mounting nut from behind (tighten to 2-3 Nm).

Contact block: Snap or screw the contact block onto the rear of the button body. Ensure the contact block orientation matches the wiring diagram — NO terminals are usually marked.

Wiring: Use 0.5-2.5mm² stranded wire with ferrules. Tighten screw terminals to 0.8 Nm. Test the button function before energizing the circuit.

Button doesn't respond when pressed

Check the contact block first — it's the most common failure point. Test continuity across the NO or NC terminals with a multimeter. If no click is felt, the return spring in the head may be broken.

Works intermittently

Contact block contacts are pitted or burned. Replace the contact block — don't try to file the contacts. Check if the rated cycle count has been exceeded.

Button feels mushy or doesn't click

The spring return mechanism in the button head is worn. Replace the head. The contact block can usually be reused if it tests OK.
