Gateron Blue — budget clicky switch.

일반적인 용도

Clicky with audible feedback. Louder than Cherry MX Blue. Popular for budget mechanical keyboard builds where click is desired.

Research Notes

1. Overview

The Gateron KS-3 Blue is a clicky mechanical keyboard switch in Gateron's foundational KS-3 PCB-mount lineup. It uses a click-jacket (click-sleeve) mechanism — the same design as Cherry MX Blue — to produce its audible and tactile click. Documented on Deskthority since at least 2015, it remains one of the most widely available budget clicky switches, sold through keyboard specialty retailers and Alibaba wholesale. It competes directly with Cherry MX Blue and Kailh Box White as the go-to entry-level clicky option.

2. User Sentiment

Community feedback is consistently positive in terms of price-to-performance. On keebtalk, one user describes Gateron KS-3 Blues as "a pretty garden variety clicky, but smoother than average" — a concise summary of the general consensus. Gateron switches are widely regarded as smoother than Cherry MX equivalents due to lower housing tolerances and a nylon stem, making the KS-3 Blue a preferred entry-level clicky for budget builds. The switch appears regularly in curated switch lists on r/MechanicalKeyboards alongside higher-end clickies like Box Navy and Box Jade, typically as the affordable baseline option. No significant complaints appear in the sampled sources; the main criticism implied by its positioning is that it is "garden variety" — competent but unremarkable compared to premium clicky options.

3. Real-World Applications

The Gateron KS-3 Blue is used in custom mechanical keyboard builds, including handwired numpads and budget keyboards. It targets enthusiasts building or buying their first clicky keyboard and is commonly sold as a standalone switch for DIY projects. The $0.12–0.13 per-unit wholesale price on Alibaba makes it a viable choice for keyboard OEM manufacturers building budget gaming or office keyboards. Gateron markets it with the description "Game Rhythm Is Strong," positioning it for gaming use cases.

5. Ordering & Compatibility

The KS-3 Blue is available from multiple keyboard specialty retailers worldwide including Joorkey, Cuxiukeys, and Diykeycap in packs of 10, 30, 70, 90, or 110 pieces. It is MX-footprint compatible (5-pin PCB mount), fitting any standard MX-compatible keyboard PCB. Related switches in the KS-3 series include Red (linear, 45g), Yellow (linear, 35g), Brown (tactile, 45g), White (clicky), and Clear (linear) variants. For wholesale/OEM sourcing, Gateron lists it on Alibaba at $0.12–0.13/unit. Compatible with all MX-spec keycap stems.

6. Known Issues

No significant issues are reported in the sampled sources. The switch's main limitation in community perception is its "garden variety" status — smooth and functional but lacking the sharpness of premium clickies like Kailh Box Jade or Box Navy. The click-jacket mechanism (shared with Cherry MX Blue) can exhibit minor stem wobble compared to click-bar designs, though this is a category-wide trait.

Panel cutout: 22mm. Insert from the front of the panel, secure with mounting nut from behind (tighten to 2-3 Nm).

Contact block: Snap or screw the contact block onto the rear of the button body. Ensure the contact block orientation matches the wiring diagram — NO terminals are usually marked.

Wiring: Use 0.5-2.5mm² stranded wire with ferrules. Tighten screw terminals to 0.8 Nm. Test the button function before energizing the circuit.

문제 해결

Button doesn't respond when pressed

Check the contact block first — it's the most common failure point. Test continuity across the NO or NC terminals with a multimeter. If no click is felt, the return spring in the head may be broken.

Works intermittently

Contact block contacts are pitted or burned. Replace the contact block — don't try to file the contacts. Check if the rated cycle count has been exceeded.

Button feels mushy or doesn't click

The spring return mechanism in the button head is worn. Replace the head. The contact block can usually be reused if it tests OK.
