Actif1590BB Cast Aluminum Enclosure (Guitar Pedal)
Hammond 1590BB — the most common guitar effects pedal enclosure.
Applications courantes
Not a button per se, but the enclosure that houses the stomp switch in guitar effects pedals. The 1590BB (120x95x34mm) is THE standard enclosure for DIY and boutique guitar pedals. Every guitarist steps on a footswitch housed in one of these. The cast aluminum construction survives being stomped thousands of times. Paired with 3PDT stomp switches.
Research Notes
1. Overview
The Hammond 1590BB is a die-cast aluminum enclosure that has become the de-facto standard box for DIY guitar effects pedals and footswitch stompboxes. It measures roughly 119 × 94 × 34 mm (4.7 × 3.7 × 1.18") — big enough to hold a 3PDT footswitch, two 1/4" jacks, a 9 V DC jack, an LED, and several pots/knobs. It ships raw (paintable/powder-coatable) aluminum. In a "button index" context it's the housing that pairs with the footswitches used in pedal builds.
2. User Sentiment
A cult standard among pedal builders — praised for being rugged, groundable (die-cast metal shields the circuit), and just the right size for a typical single effect. The whole DIY-pedal ecosystem (drill templates, pre-drilled versions, decals) is built around 1590-series sizing. Common notes: raw finish needs painting, drilling die-cast aluminum takes care, and space gets tight with many controls (step up to 1590BB2/125B/1590DD for more room).
3. Real-World Applications
Housing a DIY or boutique guitar/bass effects pedal or a footswitch controller — the metal box grounds and shields the circuit; the top face takes a 3PDT true-bypass footswitch and knobs, the sides take input/output and power jacks.
4. Technical Specifications
- Type: die-cast aluminum enclosure (stompbox size "BB")
- Dimensions: ~119 × 94 × 34 mm (4.7 × 3.7 × 1.18")
- Material/finish: die-cast aluminum, raw/paintable
- Typical fit: 3PDT footswitch + 2× 1/4" jacks + 9 V jack + LED + 2–4 pots
- Maker: Hammond Manufacturing
5. Ordering & Compatibility
Sold raw by Hammond and pedal-parts retailers (Love My Switches, Tayda, etc.); pre-drilled and powder-coated versions are widely available. Related sizes: 1590A (small), 1590B (standard MXR-ish), 1590BB (this, roomier), 1590BB2 / 125B / 1590DD (larger). Confirm interior clearance for your board/controls.
6. Known Issues
No reliability issues — it's a solid metal box. Practical notes: raw finish requires prep/paint, drilling requires proper bits/step drills (and deburring), and multi-knob layouts can crowd the BB size (choose a larger enclosure if needed). Ground the enclosure for shielding.

Panel cutout: 22mm. Insert from the front of the panel, secure with mounting nut from behind (tighten to 2-3 Nm).
Contact block: Snap or screw the contact block onto the rear of the button body. Ensure the contact block orientation matches the wiring diagram — NO terminals are usually marked.
Wiring: Use 0.5-2.5mm² stranded wire with ferrules. Tighten screw terminals to 0.8 Nm. Test the button function before energizing the circuit.

Button doesn't respond when pressed
Check the contact block first — it's the most common failure point. Test continuity across the NO or NC terminals with a multimeter. If no click is felt, the return spring in the head may be broken.
Works intermittently
Contact block contacts are pitted or burned. Replace the contact block — don't try to file the contacts. Check if the rated cycle count has been exceeded.
Button feels mushy or doesn't click
The spring return mechanism in the button head is worn. Replace the head. The contact block can usually be reused if it tests OK.
