Research Notes

1. Overview

The Gateron KS-3 Black is a linear mechanical keyboard switch produced by Gateron under their KS-3 housing series — one of the most widely known budget heavy linears in the mechanical keyboard hobby. The KS-3 housing uses nylon (top and bottom) with a POM linear stem, is MX-footprint compatible, and ships in both 5-pin PCB-mount and 3-pin plate-mount configurations. Gateron has produced this switch since at least 2015 (documented on Deskthority by community historian Daniel beardsmore), and it remains actively sold across global markets including North America, Europe, Southeast Asia, and Vietnam. The KS-3 Black represents the "black-top/black-bottom" all-nylon housing variant, distinct from the milky-top and SMD-transparent KS9 variants in Gateron's lineup.

2. User Sentiment

The community consensus is strongly positive for the price tier. On rgbkeys.com (multiple language editions), the KS-3 Black is described as delivering "a tight, consistent and direct keystroke — not extreme, but does everything well." It is frequently contrasted against the Gateron Milky Black: Milky Black is seen as softer, rounder, and more forgiving, while the KS-3 Black is praised for neutrality, snappiness, and low variation throughout travel. On Geekhack (May 2021), community members consistently rate the KS-3 Black as smoother than Cherry MX Black — Cherry MX Black was called "hella scratchy, like sandpaper" while the Gateron alternative was the go-to budget recommendation. The switch carries a 5.0/5.0 star rating across 59 reviews on diykeycap.com. Reddit users on r/MechanicalKeyboardsUK noted that "soundwise best are KS3 black top black bottom and milky top black bottom" compared to transparent KS9 variants, confirming the all-black housing produces superior acoustic results. One counterfeit concern has been flagged on Keebtalk (2024) regarding unfamiliar molds, so sourcing from reputable vendors is advised.

3. Real-World Applications

The KS-3 Black is used extensively in custom keyboard builds ranging from beginner to enthusiast level — build logs document it in 65% Alice ergonomic layouts (Maja), 60% boards (Bm60, KBDFans Tofu 60), 65% boards (NK65 V2), and TKL-adjacent builds (TOM680). The KS-3 Black housing is also extremely popular for frankenswitching: pairing the KS-3 Black housing (bottom) with Gateron Yellow or Kailh Burgundy Pro stems to create smoother, lighter custom switches. The DROP ENTR Keyboard R3 commercially ships with "Gateron Yellow KS3 - Black" (Yellow stems in KS3 Black housing), confirming mainstream keyboard manufacturer adoption. The switch is recommended for gamers and typists who prefer a heavier linear to reduce accidental keypresses.

5. Ordering & Compatibility

The KS-3 Black is widely available from specialist retailers globally. Cuxiukeys prices it at $5.32/10pcs, $18.75/70pcs, $23.00/90pcs, $28.00/110pcs. Diykeycap lists it at $12.99/10pcs, $31.99/70pcs. Mechbox UK sells samples at £0.89/switch. Extremely low prices appear on Xianyu (Chinese secondhand) around $5/110pcs. The switch is compatible with all MX-footprint keyboards; 5-pin versions require either 5-pin hot-swap sockets or clipping the two side pins for 3-pin boards. Related part numbers in the KS-3 series include KS-3 Yellow (50g), KS-3 Red (45g), KS-3 Brown (tactile), and KS-3 Blue (clicky). The Silent variant (Gateron KS-3 Black Silent, full nylon housing) is available at SwitchOddities for $0.85/switch.

6. Known Issues

Counterfeit risk has been noted at least once on Keebtalk (2024), where a buyer received KS-3 Black switches with unfamiliar molds and questioned their authenticity — buyers should source from established vendors. Factory lube quality is reported as batch-dependent; most enthusiast builds involve re-lubing with Krytox 205g0 for best results. The actuation force listed varies slightly by source (55g vs 60g) suggesting minor spec inconsistency between batches or product generations. No structural failure or durability complaints found in community discussions.

Panel cutout: 22mm. Insert from the front of the panel, secure with mounting nut from behind (tighten to 2-3 Nm).

Contact block: Snap or screw the contact block onto the rear of the button body. Ensure the contact block orientation matches the wiring diagram — NO terminals are usually marked.

Wiring: Use 0.5-2.5mm² stranded wire with ferrules. Tighten screw terminals to 0.8 Nm. Test the button function before energizing the circuit.

Mõõtmed

Veaotsing

Button doesn't respond when pressed

Check the contact block first — it's the most common failure point. Test continuity across the NO or NC terminals with a multimeter. If no click is felt, the return spring in the head may be broken.

Works intermittently

Contact block contacts are pitted or burned. Replace the contact block — don't try to file the contacts. Check if the rated cycle count has been exceeded.

Button feels mushy or doesn't click

The spring return mechanism in the button head is worn. Replace the head. The contact block can usually be reused if it tests OK.
